Bear Vice Lockout

A safer, simpler way to transport bear spray in vehicles, aircraft, commercial fleets, and backcountry operations.

Bear Vice is an industrial-grade bear spray transport lockout created to help prevent accidental discharge during transportation.

The idea was born during a Search and Rescue deployment when a volunteer’s bear spray accidentally discharged near a helicopter pilot. The incident exposed a serious gap in bear spray transportation safety. Existing holsters and bulky containers were not designed to provide the visible, repeatable lockout system that professional teams and backcountry users need.

The Incident That Started it All

During a SAR deployment, a volunteer's bear spray accidentally discharged. By sheer luck, it missed the pilot of the helicopter picking us up. If that spray had hit the pilot, it would have been a catastrophic, life-threatening aviation emergency.

That was the moment I realized the industry didn't need another holster or bulky container; we needed an industrial-grade transport lockout.

The Mission

I am building Bear Vice to give commercial fleets, search and rescue units, and backcountry recreationists a simple, visible, and verifiable protocol for transporting bear spray safely. By backing this campaign, you are helping fund the final engineering validation and tooling required to establish this new safety standard for the North American backcountry.

Our Funding Goal

$40,000 CAD

The "Made in Alberta" Standard

Reaching this $40,000 goal allows us to execute the final two critical steps without cutting corners.

Tested by the Pros, Perfected for You

We didn't just design this and call it a day. The Bear Vice you are backing is the culmination of six different prototype iterations. To ensure it meets the absolute highest safety standards, our final design is currently undergoing rigorous field testing and critical feedback loops with representatives from:

  • Parks Canada
  • Kananaskis Search and Rescue
  • Rocky Mountain House Search and Rescue
  • AIP
  • Bear Scare

Formal Engineering Certification

We will fund formal stress testing with InnoTech Alberta to certify our PA6 polymer. This includes pull-to-failure load conditions to find the exact fracture point, random vibration testing (ASTM/MIL-STD transportation profiles) to ensure the pin won't back out, and thermal conditioning from -40°C to +50°C.

"Made in Alberta" Tooling

We will fund the capital expenditure required for the heavy-duty, 2+2 cavity production tool built locally by Alta Injection. This keeps our manufacturing 100% home in Alberta, Canada, and funds our first large-scale production run for you and our B2B fleets.
